Humble Beginnings

As I am typing now, my first ever completed novel is out for scrutiny. Argh! Exciting, but equally terrifying.

Kept in the Dark is a pre-dystopian, near-future set in Buckinghamshire. The European Union is divided and Britain has been blamed for its dissolution. Failing to maintain friendships with those outside of the EU, our energy supplies are dwindling, leading to exponential fuel price-rises and frequent power cuts. Nathan works for the county council, he is fed-up of his life and has no career prospects, but is too afraid to pursue anything else. As a tireless cynic, the only person that brings Nathan joy is his niece, Heidi. But, when she is abducted, will he be the one that uncovers the truth about why she was taken? Or will he be forever kept in the dark?

I have been fortunate enough to have some willing beta-readers, who have provided me with a plethora of good comments and critical, yet encouraging appraisals. I am told that the story has promise, the characters are relatable and the plot is strong, but I am well aware it is not yet perfected.

I suppose completed was not the correct term to use, it is rough around the edges and probably across its centre as well; it will need a careful smoothing.

Next step - Second Edit with the finest of toothed combs.

Longer term plan - Submit to agents with the crossiest of crossed fingers.
